Do I Need a Porta Potty for My Home Remodel?

When does a home remodel need a porta potty?
A home remodel needs a porta potty when the crew cannot use a bathroom in the house, which is most jobs that run longer than a few days. Kitchen and bathroom remodels, roof replacements, additions and new builds usually need one. OSHA requires the contractor to give the crew a toilet.
Letting a crew use your house bathroom brings dust, mud and wear through your home. One standard unit in the driveway is cleaner for everyone. For the federal rule, see our OSHA guide.
Should the homeowner or the contractor rent it?
Either can rent the porta potty. Check your remodel contract first; many put it on the contractor. If not, renting it yourself takes one call and lets you choose the spot and service day. In our September 2026 calls, homeowners called us directly for their own projects.
One caller said it plainly: it was for construction, "but it's at my house, so it's not a business." That is fine. No business account is needed. See home rentals.
How long will I need it, and how is it billed?
Most remodels keep a unit 2 to 6 weeks; new builds keep one for months. Rentals bill in 28-day cycles from delivery day, with weekly service included. You call for pickup when the job is done. If a punch list drags on, the unit simply renews every 28 days.
